“big data” is the “corn syrup” of the tech world 

Every once in a while, I cringe when I see what marketing does to a business or a tech area. My latest cringe factor is the terminology “big data”, which is about as meaningful a description as “corn syrup”. That is to say, not very.

There is no such thing as big data…there are only really good business questions with a cheap and fast answer, at scale. 

And the scale under question is indeed exponentially larger than the scale most businesses dealt with a few years ago, which creates interesting new problems.
